"Spring Break Adventures! Volcano's, Beach's & Bright Lights"

Updated: 3 hours ago

Day 1 - Ready or not... Time for Take-off!

With recent news of kilauea volcano on Hawaii Island erupting, we new it was our chance to show the kids something AMAZING! potentially once in a lifetime. So we decided to take a last minute trip and leave school a couple of days early ahead of spring break.

Our journey started nice and early with a 7.45am departure from Los Angeles (LAX) to Maui, (OGG) on Hawaiian Airlines. An easy 5 hours.

Onboard the kids and I enjoyed Extra comfort seating - Ella & Jackson in 19AB, and myself in Row 20 (A&B).

I'd highly recommend paying the upgrade fee:

Hawaiian Airlines' Extra Comfort seating offers passengers an enhanced travel experience with several added benefits:

  • Increased Legroom: Enjoy approximately five additional inches of legroom compared to standard economy seats, providing more space to stretch out during your flight.

  • Priority Services: Benefit from priority security screening at select airports, expedited boarding, and early access to overhead bin space, ensuring a smoother and more convenient boarding process.

  • Personal Power Outlets: On Airbus A330 and A321neo aircraft, each Extra Comfort seat is equipped with a personal electrical power outlet, allowing you to charge your electronic devices during the flight.

While onboard, we enjoyed a complimentary hot meal - Breakfast today was a croissant with sausage, egg and cheese, and a beverage. For those 21+ there is also the option to enjoy a complimentary Ko Hana Rum punch.

A few Rows ahead... in First Class

Meanwhile, Gary was kicking back in 3J (First Class), sipping on the signature Mai Tai and munching on Macadamia nuts. He then enjoyed a lovely continental breakfast with some fresh tropical fruit.

He had an iPad for entertainment (provided for free), and a lie-flat bed ready whenever he wanted to recline.

He claims he worked the whole trip, though I think he had a Pineapple daiquiri in hand. :)

Overall, we had a super smooth flight. The kids sat together for the first time

and didn't kill each other, which was a nice surprise. I had an empty seat next to me, and in just 5 hours, we were landing in paradise.

Even though we love Maui, it wasn't our final stop.

After a quick plane change and a break in the Plumeria Lounge (free with Priority Pass and conveniently right across from our gate), we were on our way to Kona on a Hawaiian Airlines 717, enjoying POG juice (Passion, Orange, Guava) on our quick 45-minute flight to Kona, HI... our home for the next couple of nights.

Kona Airport [KOA]

Kona airport is a small - and can be hot depending on the time of year. Most of the seating is outdoors, but there is a nice indoor air conditioned area if you have a little longer to wait and need a break from the sun.

Be prepared to enter and exit your aircraft via stairs or a ramp - as there are no jet bridges.

Tip: if your flying into Kona try and get a window seat for some pretty amazing reef views!

We had carry on, and within minutes of exiting the aircraft we were on our FOC car rental shuttle to Alamo Rentals.

[5 mins away] within another 5 minutes we were loaded up in our Jeep Wrangler, and ready for our Hawai'i Island Adventure!
